PAUA
Paua is our Preschool room for tamariki aged 3.5 years old through to school age.
Pre-schoolers have increasing capacity for language and inquiry and for understanding other points of view. They are developing a greater awareness of themselves as learners and increasingly prefer interactions with their peers. Their capacity to cope with unpredictability and change is also increasing, especially when anchored by the emotional support, respect, and acceptance of teachers (Kaiako).
Our Kaiako support the learning and development of our pre-schoolers by providing opportunities for them to experience new challenges, pursue self-selected learning goals and participate in longer-term projects. Such opportunities encourage them to expand their capabilities and extend their learning repertoires and support them in making a smooth transition to school or kura. We have a 1 to 7 ratio in our room, with up to is fifteen children and three teachers at one time. The age range is 3 years to 5 years old.
We believe that children:
- Need a stimulating environment that is full of exploration, giving them a chance to learn skills for life.
- Experience an environment that promotes independence and self-directed learning as they navigate freely through all areas both inside and out.
- Are provided freedom to explore the world around them, free from interruptions giving them the time for their creative mind to develop.
In preschool we provide an environment which is developmentally responsive, challenging and stimulates children’s natural curiosities about the world around them. Our activities and experiences are designed to encompass the arts, nature, science, music, mathematics, literacy, social relationships and much more. We believe the essence of a child’s development and love for learning is developed through play and a balance of spontaneous and directed activities that build on and work with your child’s interests.
