Infants
All children are born with immense potential. Quality early learning helps our children begin to realise that potential and build a strong foundation for later learning and for life. Physical, cognitive and socio-emotional growth and development are more rapid during infancy than in any other period of life. Neural pathways formed during this period are the foundations for all future learning.
We believe in forming strong relationships with our pēpi (babies) and their whānau. These reciprocal relationships are integral to building a secure and nurturing relationship so that trust can flourish and learning, and growth can take flight. We have a 1 teacher to 3 pēpi ratio in our infant room and a maximum of nine babies in the room on any day.
We are very much inspired by the Pikler approach and believe in:
- Respect and trust: respect an infant and toddler’s capacities, trust children to be active initiators and follow their natural impetus for learning.
- Caregiving as a learning opportunity: children to learn through responsive and unhurried one-to-one interactions, sustained shared attention and rich language exchanges with their caregiver.
- Uninterrupted play: children are trusted to actively construct their own learning within the context of safe and stimulating environments and interactions amongst themselves.
